Year 5 win CSC business enterprise competition!

Year 5 have been working hard on their persuasive writing in English; this prove extremely useful  when a group of Newport pupils entered a business enterprise competition run by CSC and the Connaught School. CSC, an international consulting and IT services company, based at the Royal Pavilion , Aldershot  were very impressed by Newport's designs for a new primary school. Not only did the team have to devise this unique school but  they had to budget, pitch and market the new school. CSC graduates added some real life scenarios to the event such as the interview with the tax man who insisted on taking £100,000 out of their £1 million budget!

Nevertheless Ben's initial idea of a school that travelled the world in re conditioned cruise liner proved to be the winning one. Christian's use of Matt Smith as the school's celebrity ambassador linked the strong themes of travel, learning and community. The judges  (and other schools taking part in the event) were hugely impressed with the  professional presentation and the concept of learning languages in the countries in which they are spoken. All the team's hard work and great ideas were rewarded with first place in competition and a Cineworld voucher.

Well done to Ben, Christian , Katelyn, Elizabeth, Stanley, Dominic, Ellie and Cassandra. Many thanks to the staff at CSC and Connaught for hosting such a great event.

Year six rise to all sorts of challenges!

This week has been both an exciting, fun filled yet challenging week  for Year 6, as the children experienced a wide range of personal challenges-whether it be managing to reach the end of a long, dark tunnel blind folded, or to scale the dizzy heights of  a 13metre climbing wall to performing poetry to an audience of over hundred people!
The long awaited activity day dawned warm and dry and year 6 set off to enjoy  Runway's End outdoor adventure centre. The centre, opened  back in November 2011, has a fantastic facilities for activities such as caving, bouldering, abseiling, archery and a low/high ropes
course. All the children had a fantastic time and were a real credit to themselves and the school.

After all physical challenges of Runway's End, some of year 6 pupils undertook a different type of challenge...to produce, edit and perform their poetry to an audience of  approximately 100 children and adults. Having worked for just a short time with professional poet , Michael Parker, Newport pupils performed their works at a poetry slam held at Samuel Cody School. Their amazingly imaginative and confident performances were highly praised by a panel of poetry experts from First Partnership. The teamwork seen in some of the physical challenges earlier in the week was much in evidence in the group performances.Well done to everyone involved. The videos give just a flavour of some of the performances.

Runways End!

On Monday year 6 visited Runways End as part of their end of year celebrations for working so hard this year. They enjoyed many activities including: climbing, caving, archery and low ropes. Miss Cooke, Mrs Shuttleworth, Mrs Fieldgate, Mrs Amor and Mrs Lodge were really impressed with their behaviour, courage and determination in all the activities. We hope they thoroughly enjoyed themselves!
